    Conservation Areas are "areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance". They are protected by planning policy for various reasons: it may be the presence of architecturally important buildings, their grouping, the presence of a historic street pattern, the open space pattern or a combination of features which contribute to the special character of the area.
