South Ribble’s new Mayor takes up the chains

The new Mayor of South Ribble – a former policeman, lecturer, and investigator – has spoken of his pride at becoming the borough’s ‘First Citizen’.

Councillor John Rainsbury was tonight (Tuesday) installed as the new Mayor – succeeding the incumbent Councillor Mick Titherington, who has served in the role during the last year.

Member for Hoole ward at the authority, Councillor Rainsbury used his inaugural speech – addressed to the assembled Full Council, as well family and friends – to pledge his commitment to the post and express how excited both he and the Mayoress, wife Shirley Rainsbury, are to get started.

Councillor Rainsbury said: “I am deeply honoured, privileged and very proud to have been elected as the Mayor of South Ribble. It is my promise to do my utmost to serve our community to the best of my ability.

“I want to promote the values of – and the advantages of – living in what is acknowledged to be the best place to live nationally.

“Shirley and I are looking forward to meeting the people of South Ribble and visiting many schools, businesses, churches and other venues where we know so many exciting activities are taking place.”

He also thanked his family and friends – including two old friends Bob and Pat Semple who had undertaken a two-day drive from their home in France to attend – at the Mayor-making ceremony where he officially received the chains.

The Mayor’s first engagement will be attending a youth-led project addressing young people’s mental health at the Civic Centre on Wednesday evening.

And an installation banquet will be held at the same venue on Friday night to officially welcome him to the role.

Born in Dukinfield, Greater Manchester, Councillor Rainsbury and his wife Shirley have three children, four grandchildren, and one great grandson. They are both keen cooks, gardeners and holidaymakers.

The Mayor’s charities for this year are St Catherine’s Hospice, HomeStart Central Lancashire, and The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA).

The Deputy Mayor for 2018/19 will be Councillor Carol Chisholm, with son James as Mayoral Consort.
